Naalbinded

Naalbound? What’s the past tense of “to naalbind”?

I think I might have managed to cast on and do a few Olso stitches.

This is the video I followed: How to Nalbind. Step1: Make a Starting Chain using the Oslo Stitch on YouTube. I watched the video a few times, then picked up the yarn and tried to make it look like the presenter’s example. I’d pause the video and compare the yarn in my hands to the yarn in her hands. I did this several times – to the brink of rage-quitting.

But I found some patience somewhere, so yay!

I have a long way to go, but I think this counts as naalbinding. It just has a lot of tension issues that I’ll work out with practice. Odin isn’t sure if it’s correct either, but he did determine that it would be a good cat toy and had to be saved from himself.

My observations so far:

  • The Oslo stitch at least eats up a whole lot of yarn. Naalbound fabric, if made of natural fibers, should be extremely warm.
  • After tracing the treads, trying to make sure I hadn’t dropped a stitch, I had a sudden insight about where knotwork designs – the kind usually assumed to be Celtic – might’ve come from. Once I make a sample of naalbinding with correct tension, I’ll be able to show you.
